Additional Information on the Lutheran Church
The Lutheran church is the original evangelical branch of the one, holy, universal and apostolic church. By Martin Luther’s time, many false teachings had crept into the medieval church which obscured the free grace of Jesus Christ in the gospel. The two most serious errors were: 1) that God will forgive and save you IF you perform good works and 2) Sacred Tradition (the Roman Papacy) is equally authoritative to and the only interpreter of Sacred Scripture.
For Luther, the Reformation was never about revolution. He loved the medieval church and wanted to reform and purify it, not leave it. But in 1521 Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther and with him all evangelical catholics. When the Council of Trent (1545-1563) later declared that Protestant convictions were “eternally damned” the Roman Catholic Church was born. With more than 68 million members throughout the world, the Lutheran churches today constitute the largest denomination to emerge from the Protestant Reformation that began in Germany in 1517.
